An active response to China’s “Belt and Road” Initiative and “Chinese Culture Goes Gobal” strategy, Nepal “Princess Bhrikuti” Himalayan Cultural Tourism Innovation & Development Project is a large-scale comprehensive overseas cultural tourism project in Lamatar, Kathmandu, Nepal. It is planned to cover 496 Chinese mu with a total investment of $450 million. The project includes such infrastructure as electricity generation and transmission, telecommunications, water supply, waste water management, roads, and facilities like a theatre, a town featuring pan-Himalayan intangible culture, Chinese Brand Town, International Artist Village, a vocational school, a compulsory education school, boutique hotels and homestays. To date the initial site survey, research and feasibility analysis have been completed and its detailed planning and action plan already made. The historical drama “Princess Bhrikuti”, the core project of Nepal • China Tibet Cultural Industry Park, presents the story of Nepalese Princess Bhrikuti’s marriage to Songsten Gampo. It gives visitors from around the world an opportunity to experience Chinese and Tibetan culture in close-up and constitutes a symbolic demonstration site that boosts China’s cultural soft power. It is thereby echoes from afar with the large-scale Tibetan culture epic drama “Princess Wencheng” and the indoor historical drama “Princess Jincheng”, both proudly presented by Usunhome Group in Lhasa, Tibet.
The development of this project will further expand the capacity of cultural tourism in Kathmandu. It will diversify the forms of cultural tourism, improve the quality of tourist consumption and boost the number of tourists. At the same time, it will help tackle issues in local education and employment and increase locals’ incomes. Ultimately, it will prove an exemplary project that facilitates Sino-Nepal cultural exchanges, embodies Chinese and Nepalese cultures and drives the fusion of cultural industries in the pan-Himalayan region. An important agreement on it was signed on Beijing “Belt and Road” International Cooperation Summit Forum.
